06 Craigieburn

On a steep narrow site, this home follows contour and is designed to sit within it's landscape rather than on top of. It's a 4 bedroom home, with two living rooms, and a self contained office or b&b suite.

The material palette is very natural, with black cedar, and board and battens stained Japanese Maple. The colours were chosen to reflect the rata and pohutukawa trees on the site, with the black representing the depth of foliage, and the red the blooms.

Even though the form of the building is set up to appear floating in places, the foundations are securely attached to the bedrock beneath, ensuring resilience if any earthquakes hit Christchurch again.

Outdoor living spaces are terraced within the landscaping, with views over the adjacent bvalley and farmland, over the ocean up to the Kaikoura ranges.
